A massive, multi-decade international manhunt has concluded following the deportation of an elderly South Korean national from Ghana. The suspect, a man in his 80s whose identity is being withheld by law enforcement under privacy guidelines, allegedly managed to evade global authorities for 22 years while living as an undocumented immigrant in West Africa.
The individual faces charges in South Korea for his alleged role in coordinating one of the largest maritime narcotics operations in recent history, valued at an estimated $3.6 billion.
The Alleged Illicit Operations (2002–2004)
According to official reports released by the Korean National Police Agency (KNPA) and the Busan Coast Guard, the suspect’s criminal actions date back to the early 2000s. Investigators allege that between 2002 and 2004, the man utilized his position as a supervisor on a deep-sea fishing vessel to traffic narcotics.
On five separate occasions, he reportedly navigated international waters off the coast of South America to transport vast shipments of illicit substances on behalf of a global drug syndicate, receiving significant financial payouts for his logistical oversight. In total, authorities tie him to the movement of 5,385 kilograms (over 5 metric tonnes) of pure 'illicit substance', with a street value pegged at 4.8 trillion South Korean won.
Two Decades in Hiding
The suspect's run began around 2004. After South Korean prosecutors successfully intercepted the ring and arrested several of his onboard accomplices, the supervisor fled the jurisdiction. He successfully crossed international borders and entered Ghana, where he established a quiet, off-grid existence.
For more than two decades, the octogenarian lived in the Ghana without valid legal residency or immigration status. Meanwhile, the Busan Coast Guard secured an Interpol Red Notice against him, keeping his file active among global intelligence networks.
The Arrest and Extradition
The breakthrough in the cold case came through a joint intelligence-sharing operation involving the Ghana Police Service, the South Korean Embassy in Accra, and the KNPA. Once his exact location was verified, Ghanaian authorities apprehended the suspect on charges of illegal residence.
The Ghanaian government formally finalized his deportation on October 20, 2026. Photos released by South Korean state media show the elderly suspect arriving at the airport in South Korea in a wheelchair, where he was immediately taken into custody by the Busan Coast Guard.
