SPAIN — On Wednesday, October 28, 2026, just after 09:00 local time, at least 68 people were reported killed and over 100 others were said to be injured after a high-speed Renfe AVE train rear-ended a stationary Iryo train in central Spain's Toledo province.
The collisions involved a state-owned Renfe high-speed express train traveling from Madrid toward Andalusia barrelled into the rear of a stationary private Iryo high-speed train. The impact caused carriages to derail and plunge down an embankment.
At least 68 people are reported confirmed dead, with more than 100 injured (including dozens seriously or critically). US and other international citizens were said to be among the wounded.
The Prime Minister of Spain, Pedro Sánchez has visited the site and announced three days of official national mourning from October 29 through October 31. And Over 500 emergency personnel, firefighters, military units, and the Civil Guard were deployed to the wreckage.
Spain's Transport Minister, Óscar Puente, described the disaster as "inexplicable," stating that an initial computer communications failure in the LZB safety network automatically halted moving trains on the track. However, traffic control subsequently allowed the Renfe train to proceed past a red signal without restrictions before it struck the stopped Iryo train.
This fatal train accident marks Spain's second major high-speed rail tragedy of 2026, following a deadly January crash near Adamuz in Córdoba that killed 46 people, placing intense political and public scrutiny on the country's rail infrastructure.
