September 30, 2026 — A Flydubai flight traveling from Dubai to Tel Aviv was diverted to Saudi Arabia on Wednesday after an alleged violent confrontation in the cockpit left the captain seriously injured and raised fears that the aircraft was being deliberately brought down.
Flight FZ1073, operated by a Boeing 737 MAX 8, was carrying 174 passengers, including children, when the incident occurred. The aircraft transmitted emergency signals and made a sharp descent before landing safely at Tabuk Airport in northwestern Saudi Arabia. All passengers and crew were reported safe and accounted for.
According to statements from Israeli officials and accounts cited by international media, the co-pilot allegedly stabbed the captain and attempted to interfere with the aircraft’s controls. The captain, identified in reports as Smit Machchhar, an Indian national (some media reported an Emirati pilot), is said to have resisted the attack and helped prevent the aircraft from being brought down. Israeli passengers and other crew members subsequently entered or gained access to the cockpit and helped restrain the co-pilot.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said the aircraft had entered a spin and begun descending after one pilot attacked the other. Netanyahu said passengers and crew members overpowered the alleged assailant and that additional crew later helped stabilize the aircraft. He praised Captain Machchhar and the passengers who intervened, describing their actions as having prevented a major disaster.
Both pilots were injured and taken to a Saudi hospital after the emergency landing. Saudi authorities reportedly arrested the alleged attacker and began questioning him. The co-pilot was identified by Israeli officials as an Omani national. However, the airline has not publicly confirmed the identities or nationalities of the pilots.
Flydubai confirmed that an “altercation” had occurred in the flight deck and said its crew successfully secured the aircraft and diverted it to Tabuk. The airline said the reasons and motives behind the incident remained unknown and were subject to a formal investigation. It urged the public to avoid premature conclusions while authorities gathered evidence.
The incident prompted an immediate security response in Israel. Netanyahu ordered heightened security measures for Israeli and foreign airlines, while Israeli officials described the episode as a serious aviation-security incident. Israel’s defense minister characterized it as a possible attack, but that assessment has not been established as the final finding of an official investigation.
The passengers were later flown to Israel aboard a replacement Flydubai aircraft. Investigators are expected to examine the cockpit voice recorder, flight-data recorder, air-traffic-control communications and the accounts of passengers and crew to determine exactly what triggered the confrontation and whether the co-pilot intended to crash or hijack the aircraft.
