President-elect Asiwaju Bola Tinubu has said that the Federal Government, under his administration, will not be obliged to make refunds on projects undertaken by states. The statement was given in response to a request made by Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers State during a two-day visit by Tinubu to the state.
Tinubu did note, however, that he may reconsider his stance on the refunds if Wike was able to lobby him effectively. Their growing relationship was also noted, with Tinubu commending Wike for his character and principles. Wike had previously made the request for refunds, arguing that procurement laws make it difficult to complete projects within a reasonable timeframe.
Procurement processes can prove lengthy, due to variations requested by contractors in response to rising costs. Wike therefore suggested that a change to the procurement laws would help streamline the process.
