The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has announced plans to carry out random sampling of certain brands of noodles and its seasoning in Nigeria.
The move is in response to the recall of a brand of noodles by Taiwan and Malaysia authorities and will test for ethylene oxide, a carcinogenic chemical that has been linked to an increased risk of lymphoid and breast cancers.
The testing will be conducted at production facilities and markets to prevent smuggling of the product into Nigeria. While the brand of noodles has been banned in Nigeria for many years, NAFDAC hopes to ensure that other noodles and spices used in the country are tested for the presence of ethylene oxide.
