Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has announced the launch of the first set of electric buses for the state's mass transit plan. The governor took to his Twitter page to reveal the milestone, sharing pictures of the eco-friendly vehicles. According to Sanwo-Olu, the introduction of the electric buses is part of the state government's efforts to modernize every sector of Lagos.
These electric buses have the capacity to travel 280km when fully charged, making them optimal for the unique transportation in Lagos. Additionally, the governor revealed that the efficient buses have an average daily usage of 200km by existing BRTs, which indicates that commuters can rest assured that the buses can conveniently convey them to their destinations without stopping mid-transit.
The electric buses mark a new era of more environmentally friendly public transport in Lagos. With these eco-friendly vehicles, Lagosians can enjoy reduced carbon emissions, while transport costs will also decrease. The pilot scheme will be launched over the coming months to gather necessary data, which will be analyzed to improve the operational efficiency of the electric buses relative to the current BRT buses.
The adoption of electric buses in the Lagos State mass transit scheme is a welcome development that highlights efforts to create a sustainable and thriving ecosystem in Nigeria's commercial hub. As Lagos State prides itself as a city of the future, the use of electric buses will promote sustainable transportation at low costs while improving the general quality of public transport in the state.
