On Wednesday, President Muhammadu Buhari swore in six new permanent secretaries for the Federal Civil Service. The ceremony took place at the Council Chambers of the Presidential Villa in Abuja just before the weekly meeting of the Federal Executive Council.

The sworn-in permanent secretaries and their states of origin include Mahmud Kambari from Borno State, Esuabana Nko-Asanye from Cross River, Lamuwa Ibrahim from Gombe, Yakubu Kofar-Mata from Kano, Oloruntola Michael from Ogun, and Richard Pheelangwah from Taraba State.

According to Femi Adesina, the Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, the ceremony marked the end of a prequalification exercise for directors by the Office of the Head of Civil Service of the Federation that lasted for weeks. He added that the selection exercise involved competency tests and interactions with various stakeholders. The President had approved their appointment as permanent secretaries about a month ago, and Dr. Folashade Yemi-Esan, the Head of Civil of the Federation, announced the appointments on March 29.

The President also emphasized the importance of merit and competency in the selection process for the civil service. He urged the new permanent secretaries to prioritize work in the public interest, promote ethical standards in the civil service, and refrain from engaging in corrupt activities.
