Nigeria's Third Mainland Bridge in Lagos State is set to undergo a 24-month repair following the approval of N6.28 billion by the Federal Government. The maintenance work will cover 11 kilometres, including interchanges, ramps, and critical links. The move aligns with Executive Order 11 signed by the President in April 2022, giving legal backing to the country's national maintenance policy.

Babatunde Fashola, the Minister of Works and Housing, disclosed this development during a briefing with State House correspondents on Wednesday after the Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting at the Presidential Villa. According to Fashola, the previous works on the bridge focused largely on the substructure of the bridge, such as the underwater piles, the pile caps, and the replacement of the expansion joints and the bearings. However, the current work will deal with the driving surface and aesthetics, including treating potholes, restoring missing guardrails, and addressing misaligned pleats.

Fashola stated that there are no anticipated prolonged closures during the works. He also noted that the Lagos State Public Works Corporation will focus on the functional structure of the bridge, such as the underwater piles, while the Federal Government will undertake surface maintenance.

The Third Mainland Bridge is one of the major routes that connect Lagos Island to the mainland. It was constructed in 1990 and spans a total length of 11.8 kilometres. The bridge is a critical infrastructure that plays a crucial role in easing transportation in Lagos State.

This repair work comes two weeks after the Lagos State Government announced its intention to rehabilitate the 32-year-old bridge to repair failed and peeled asphaltic sections and substructure. The move is expected to reduce traffic congestion and ensure the safety of motorists who use the bridge daily.
