Niger State Registrar of Shari’a Court, Mallam Namaru, who was abducted on March 24, 2023, has been killed by bandits two weeks after his abduction. He was reportedly shot dead alongside other abductees due to pressure from security operatives to rescue them. The details of the killing are still unclear. A vigilante member was also shot dead during the rescue operation. The Niger State Police Command’s Public Relations Officer, DSP Wasiu Abiodun, could not be reached for comment on the killing.

The situation in Niger State is getting worse as bandits continue to attack communities, kidnapping people, and causing fear among the residents. Ibbi, which was considered a safe haven and had accommodated internally displaced persons from other communities, has come under attacks in the last two weeks. The bandits attacked Kasuwan-Garba in the same Local Government on Monday, kidnapping an unspecified number of people.

Abdullahi Abubakar, a resident of the area, stated that efforts are ongoing to retrieve the remains of those killed for burial and rescue those still alive. However, the situation is very scary, and people live in fear every day because each time the bandits strike, they must kidnap people.

The killing of the Registrar of Shari’a Court, Mallam Namaru, is a significant blow to the state, and it highlights the deteriorating security situation in Niger State. The government needs to take urgent steps to address the situation and provide security for the citizens. The security operatives also need to be adequately equipped and motivated to combat the bandits and restore peace to the state.
