Twitter Charges Users for 2FA Using SMS Messages

Twitter users have expressed concern over the tech giant’s new policy that charges customers $8 per month for two-factor authentication (2FA), which is essential for protecting their accounts from hackers.

The move comes as the company attempts to cut costs, and to combat “bad actors” who use phone-number-based 2FA for malicious purposes.

Twitter has announced that, starting on 20 March, only paying subscribers will be able to use text messages as a method of 2FA.

Twitter Blue subscribers will be able to use text message 2FA as a method of protecting their accounts, but this may vary by country and carrier.
Other Twitter users have criticised the decision, calling it “reckless” and claiming that it puts basic security measures behind a paywall.

It is advised that those who are not paying for Twitter Blue switch to app-based 2FA, which is more secure and can be implemented quickly
