At Least 50 People Killed in Brazil Flooding and Landslides

Torrential rains in Brazil's southeast have led to devastating floods and landslides, resulting in the deaths of at least 50 people, according to authorities. Despite rescue workers' efforts to search for survivors, dozens of people remain missing.

The region was hit by record storms that dropped more than the typical amount of rainfall for February in just one day, triggering violent floods and landslides.

The emergency official, Villas Boas, acknowledged that with each passing hour, the chances of finding survivors diminish, but they remain hopeful that air pockets may still exist.

The Sao Paulo state government reported that a significant number of people are still missing in the aftermath of the disaster. Governor Tarcisio de Freitas admitted that the official weather alert system had failed to prevent the tragedy.
Despite sending 2.6 million alerts via text message, the governor stated that it was not effective. To mitigate such events in the future, he plans to install sirens to warn those in high-risk areas during the next rainy season.

Poor favela neighborhoods, where an estimated 9.5 million of Brazil's 215 million people reside, are mainly in areas at high risk of flooding or landslides.

Brazil has experienced a series of deadly weather catastrophes in recent years, which experts attribute to climate change.
