Labour Party Presidential Campaign Council DG reveals supporter's hand amputated after Lagos rally attack

The Director-General of the Labour Party Presidential Campaign Council, Akin Osuntokun, has revealed that one of the party's supporters had his hand amputated after being attacked around Tafawa Balewa Square (TBS) in Lagos on February 11, 2023.

Osuntokun disclosed this during an interview on Channels Television's special election program, The 2023 Verdict, on Tuesday. He also called on the new police commissioner in Lagos, Idowu Owohunwa, to monitor the activities of the Resident Electoral Commissioner of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Lagos, Olusegun Agbaje, and prevent any form of electoral "subversion."
Speaking about INEC's preparedness for the upcoming February 25 and March 11 polls, Osuntokun expressed doubts, citing factors such as voter suppression through violence and discriminatory practices by INEC officials during rallies. He also expressed reservations about the Bimodal Voter Registration System (BVAS), which will be used for the accreditation and authentication of voters in 2023, pointing to the nullification of the victory of the PDP in the Osun State election due to over-voting.

The Lagos State Police Command had condemned the February 11 attack on Obi's supporters as "reprehensible" and vowed to investigate the incident thoroughly. According to Lagos police spokesman Benjamin Hundeyin, four people were injured during the attack, and the injured and other witnesses are assisting the police with relevant information to aid the apprehension and prosecution of the attackers.

The attack on Obi's supporters highlights the need for security measures to be put in place to ensure the safety of all participants in political rallies and events. The Electoral Commission must also ensure that its officials adhere to the highest ethical standards in the discharge of their duties and that no discriminatory practices are allowed. It is essential that the upcoming elections are free, fair, and peaceful to avoid the possibility of post-election violence.
