Airstrikes on drug factories that killed one of Syria’s most well-known drug kingpins and his family in Sweida province have been reported by an opposition war monitor and a pro-government radio station; alongside, another strike in the southern province of Daraa hit a building known to house a drug factory.

The unusual attacks followed Jordan’s recent warning that it would use force within Syria to eliminate drug trafficking that passes through its territories onto the oil-rich Gulf nations.

The captagon producer was one of the most-wanted by the Jordanian authorities, and believed to have been facilitating drug smuggling, which has flourished during the ongoing conflict.

The strikes come a day after Syria's suspension was lifted from the Arab League, with the country having been sanctioned for its crackdown on protesters.

One of the key topics of discussion of rekindling ties was Syria's thriving illicit drug industry, especially captagon; western governments have estimated that it has generated billions of dollars in revenue for President Bashar Assad, his Syrian associates, and allies. However, Damascus has denied the accusations.
