A 23-year-old Nigerian medical graduate, Nnani Adaobi Marian, has died after being critically wounded in a Russian airstrike in Ukraine, just days before she was due to graduate from Kharkiv National Medical University.
Reports say Marian was injured on June 29 when Russian forces dropped aerial bombs on Kharkiv’s Kholodnohirskyi district. She was reportedly on her way to a graduation photoshoot with a friend when the attack happened. Her friend, Fatima Huseynova, died at the scene.
Marian was taken to hospital in Kharkiv and later transferred to Germany for further treatment, but doctors were unable to save her life. The university confirmed her death and described her as hardworking, kind-hearted, and deeply committed to medicine.
She had studied at Kharkiv National Medical University since 2020 and had also completed internships at the University of Cambridge and Biruni University in Turkey. According to reports, the two women had been expected to receive their diplomas the following day.
