UNITED STATES — The US Justice Department has accused Google of illegally maintaining its monopoly on search by paying billions of dollars to device makers, wireless companies, and browser makers to ensure its search engine maintains its dominant market share of around 90%.
Google's lawyer argued that the payments were to compensate partners for making sure the software gets timely security updates and maintenance.
The trial is expected to last up to 10 weeks, with two phases. The US government is seeking "structural relief as needed".
If Google is found guilty of breaking antitrust law, Judge Amit Mehta may instruct Google to sell assets or simply order it to stop practices found to be illegal.
