NIGERIA — The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) has advised Nigerians to update their prepaid meters before the November 2024 deadline to avoid difficulties in recharging their meters. The commission announced this on Tuesday through its X handle (formerly known as Twitter), stating that prepaid meter users who fail to update their meters might face challenges in accessing electricity credits.

The regulatory agency assured Nigerians that the upgrade process is free and does not tamper with the units in the meter. NERC urged electricity consumers to contact their respective distribution companies (DisCos) for more information on the process. According to NERC, the DisCos will begin the process by issuing two free Key Change Tokens (KCTs), which will update the meter.

The decision to update prepaid meters is part of the government's effort to improve the efficiency and transparency of the electricity market while reducing the incidence of electricity theft. The upgrade will also help the DisCos to monitor electricity consumption, identify outstanding debts, and reduce the incidence of estimated billing.
