UNITED STATES — Marion County Sheriff's Deputy John Durm, a dedicated 38-year veteran of the department, tragically lost his life on Monday after being assaulted by an inmate during a hospital visit in Indianapolis.
The inmate, identified as Orlando Mitchell, launched the attack inside the fortified entrance of the Adult Detention Center, stole the transport van, and later crashed into a utility pole.
Mitchell, who had been awaiting trial for the murder of his ex-girlfriend, is now in custody again and reported to be in stable condition. Indianapolis police are treating the incident as an intentional act of homicide and are conducting a thorough investigation.
The devastating loss of Deputy Durm follows the recent fatal shooting of Tell City Sgt. Heather Glenn at Perry County Memorial Hospital, highlighting the risks faced by law enforcement officers in the line of duty.
Governor Eric Holcomb expressed deep sorrow over the loss and acknowledged the sacrifices made by those in uniform to protect the community.
