Russian President Vladimir Putin reportedly offered members of the Wagner mercenary group, which recently staged a failed mutiny, a chance to continue serving under their own commander.
Putin told Kommersant that the group could “gather in one place and continue to serve,” while being led by the individual known as “Sedoy”.
He did not clarify whether the new arrangement would result in exile or allow the group to remain in Russia. Putin also acknowledged the absence of any legal status for private military groups.
Private military companies are illegal under Russian law but Putin recently admitted Wagner had received $1bn in state funding in the past year.
