Canada, Sweden, Ukraine, and the UK have initiated legal proceedings against Iran at the International Court of Justice in response to the shooting down of Ukraine International Airlines flight PS752 in January 2020.
The four nations are seeking damages on behalf of the families of the 176 victims who tragically lost their lives. BBC reports.
Iran admitted its mistake three days after the incident, revealing that the plane was hit by two missiles fired by a Revolutionary Guards air defense unit shortly after taking off from Tehran.
The application to the court asserts that Iran violated multiple obligations under a convention on civil aviation by shooting down the aircraft and failing to prevent it during a period of heightened tension with the US. The nations also accuse Iran of conducting an unfair investigation and prosecution.
The plaintiffs request Iran's acknowledgment of its wrongful acts, an apology to the families, assurances of non-recurrence, full reparation for injuries caused, the return of victims' belongings, and comprehensive compensation for the affected families. Previously, the group had urged Iran to submit to binding arbitration, but with the deadline expired, legal action is now underway.
