Chinese President Xi Jinping warned Russian President Vladimir Putin against using nuclear weapons in Ukraine during his state visit to Moscow in March, according to multiple Western and Chinese officials.
This comes amidst concerns reported by Ukraine that Russia may have placed explosives on the roof of Europe's largest nuclear power plant in Zaporizhzhia and may be planning to detonate them as a way to simulate an attack and blame Kyiv's forces.
China's influence over Russia has raised hopes that Xi's warning may deter Putin from using nuclear weapons, given Moscow's relationship with Beijing.
European officials also welcomed China's stance against nuclear weapons in the ongoing conflict.
