UNITED STATES — A federal judge has invalidated a Tennessee law outlawing drag shows in public or where children may watch them, saying it was both unconstitutional and vaguer than was necessary.
The ban belongs to a wider conservative campaign that has aimed at suppressing queer entertainment events and rationalizing transphobic policies, including one by Texas that has prohibited gender-affirming care from being given to young trans people.
26 bans of this nature, all claiming their targets could have a harmful effect on minors, were introduced across America this year.
What are Drag Shows?
Drag shows have become a popular form of entertainment in the United States, particularly within the LGBTQ+ community. These performances often involve gender-bending and comedic acts, as well as dancing and singing.
However, there has been a recent push by some conservative lawmakers to ban or regulate these events, claiming they are harmful to children.
