WASHINGTON — High-ranking officials from South Korea and the United States have agreed to jointly curb the flow of funds into North Korea's illegal weapons development projects. Kim Gunn, South Korea's top nuclear negotiator, announced the collaboration with US special representative for North Korea, Sung Kim, during a meeting in Washington. The two officials emphasized the need to make North Korea understand that its provocative actions will lead to significant consequences.

Kim Gunn said in a statement that the two sides have agreed to work together earnestly in cutting off funds to North Korea's nuclear and missile development programs to a greater degree. The meeting followed North Korea's failed launch targetting a military reconnaissance satellite, and the nuclear envoys discussed strategies to counter future provocations by North Korea.

"We must make North Korea realize that there is nothing to be gained from provocation," said Kim. With North Korea planning another so-called satellite launch, South Korea and the US have reviewed and aligned countermeasures to thwart any further provocative actions. The officials emphasized the importance of dissuading North Korea from passing the point of no return with its nuclear program.
