The controversy that surrounded the supplementary elections in Adamawa State has taken another turn as the suspended Resident Electoral Commissioner, Hudu Yunusa Ari, has been released on administrative bail after being arrested and questioned by the Nigerian Police Force.

The Nigerian Police Force spokesperson, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, confirmed the release in a statement on Friday, adding that investigations are still ongoing.

Ari had declared All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate Aisha ‘Binani’ Dahiru the winner of the election, despite the collation of results still being ongoing. This led the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to nullify the declaration and suspend the REC.

President Muhammadu Buhari ordered a full investigation into the matter, including the security personnel around Ari when he made the declaration.

Ari recently denied allegations that he was offered N2 billion and stated that it is against his religion to collect money in exchange for favours.

While speaking with BBC Hausa, Ari said, “Where will I take N2 billion to? I saw it on social media that I was offered N2 billion. I don’t regret announcing Binani winner of the election. Anything you do according to the law, you won’t regret it.”

The suspended REC is expected to report to the police headquarters every weekday until investigations are concluded on the matter.
