On Friday, authorities in Lagos, Nigeria reported a fire at a shanty town located near Alaba International Market. Though initial reports indicated that the market itself had caught fire, the police have clarified that it was the shanties that were ablaze.
Benjamin Hundeyin, the police spokesperson, said that the fire was started after officers from Ojo Division raided a criminal hideout in the area and made several arrests. Weapons were also recovered from the scene. Mr. Hundeyin did not provide any information on who set the shanties on fire.
This incident highlights a growing issue in Lagos, where shanty towns have become a common feature of the cityscape. Many of these areas are overcrowded and lack basic amenities such as running water and electricity. This makes them particularly vulnerable to fires and other hazards.
The Alaba International Market is known as one of the largest electronics markets in West Africa, with an estimated annual turnover of over $2 billion. It is home to thousands of traders and attracts customers from all over the region. The market has been affected by several fires in recent years, causing significant damage to businesses and livelihoods.
Authorities have yet to release any information on the extent of the damage caused by the fire.
