The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has filed a lawsuit against the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for failing to investigate reports of electoral violence and bribery allegations against some state governors and their deputies during the 2023 general elections.
The electoral body was presented with SERAP's request to investigate the allegations, however, the group is proceeding with the lawsuit after claiming no meaningful response from INEC. SERAP alleges that the widespread reports of voter intimidation and suppression during the most recent presidential, national assembly and governorship elections were facilitated by political party agents and thugs across Nigeria's six geopolitical zones.
The advocacy group is now seeking an independent counsel to investigate the allegations as well as asking INEC to prosecute all arrested electoral offenders in the 2023 general election, if legal action is not taken to rectify the issue.
