Premium Times, a Nigerian news outlet, has conducted an investigation into the results of the 2023 general election in Obio/Akpor Local Government Area (LGA) of Rivers State. According to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), former Lagos State Governor Bola Tinubu of APC won the election in the area with 80,239 votes, while Peter Obi, the Presidential Candidate of the Labour Party (LP), received only 3,829 votes.
However, Premium Times' review of the results from various polling units in the area revealed a sharp contrast with the result declared by INEC. Premium Times' tally shows that the All Progressives Congress (APC) received 17,158 votes, while the Labour Party (LP) got 73,311 votes. The investigation also found that some results were altered in favour of the APC, with the original scores mutilated. For instance, at the Rumuorluoji Open Space II polling unit in Oro-Igwe Ward, the APC's original score of 17 was changed to 217, while the LP's score of 227 was altered to 027.
Premium Times' investigation raises questions about the credibility of Nigeria's electoral process and calls for more transparency and accountability. It also shows that the results of elections in Nigeria are not always what they seem, and that more needs to be done to ensure that the voice of the people is heard and respected.
