Over-speeding and reckless driving caused a multi-vehicle accident in Iyana-Ipaja area of Lagos, which left three people severely injured and one dead. The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) revealed that the driver of a white Camry car lost control and hit a commercial tricycle from the rear. The tricycle went off balance and obstructed an upcoming fully loaded Mazda commercial bus going to Iyana-Ipaja. The injured victims were immediately rushed to different hospitals by their relatives, but unfortunately, one of them reportedly died on the way to the hospital.

During the rescue operation, LASTMA operatives found a suspected ritualist inside the commercial tricycle involved in the accident. The passenger was caught with more than 100 pieces of used small children’s ‘pampers’ with huge sums of money of different denominations. LASTMA immediately handed over the suspect to the police at the scene of the accident.

According to Bolaji Oreagba, the General Manager of LASTMA, the accident was avoidable if the driver had not over-speed. He reiterated that the Lagos State government has been educating drivers on the dangers of over-speeding and reckless driving. Oreagba warned motorists to ensure that their vehicles are in good condition, particularly the brakes before driving on Lagos roads.

LASTMA operatives quickly removed the vehicles involved in the accident from the road to avoid impeding the free flow of traffic. They handed over the vehicles to the police for further investigations.

The incident highlights the need for motorists to drive safely and obey traffic rules to prevent avoidable accidents. It also underscores the importance of regular public education on safe driving practices by the government and other relevant authorities.
