Borno State Governor, Babagana Zulum, has approved the extension of the retirement age for teachers in the state by five years. According to a circular issued by the Borno State Teaching Service Board, teachers in the state can now work until they reach the age of 65 or complete 40 years of pensionable service, whichever comes first.
Interested teachers who wish to take advantage of the extension must submit a letter through their principals and include a medical certificate of fitness from any government hospital. This move comes after President Buhari signed the Harmonized Retirement Age for Teachers in Nigeria Act, which sets the retirement age for teachers in Nigeria at 65 or after 40 years of pensionable service.
The Act also exempts teachers from the Public Service Rule or any legislation that requires public servants to retire at 60 or after 35 years of service.
