Apple has released an urgent security update for iPhone users, iOS 16.4.1, which comes with a warning to update immediately. The update addresses two security vulnerabilities that have been actively exploited by hackers.

The vulnerabilities are located in the IOSurface Accelerator and WebKit, both of which can lead to arbitrary code execution. Hackers have been using these vulnerabilities in real-life attacks, making it necessary for users to update their devices as soon as possible.

The IOSurfaceAccelerator vulnerability could allow an app to execute arbitrary code with kernel privileges. This issue has been addressed with improved input validation in the update. Apple is aware of a report that this issue has been actively exploited.

The WebKit vulnerability, on the other hand, could allow processing of maliciously crafted web content that leads to arbitrary code execution. Apple has addressed this issue with improved memory management. Similarly, Apple is aware of a report that this issue has been actively exploited.

Apple's security updates are not disclosed, discussed, or confirmed until patches or releases are available. For more information about security, customers can visit the Apple Product Security page.

The iOS 16.4.1 and iPadOS 16.4.1 updates were released on April 7, 2023. The update is available for iPhone 8 and later, iPad Pro (all models), iPad Air 3rd generation and later, iPad 5th generation and later, and iPad mini 5th generation and later.

Apple has always been proactive in addressing security vulnerabilities on its devices. Its recent security updates have addressed several issues that could have led to arbitrary code execution, among other things.

The two vulnerabilities addressed in the iOS 16.4.1 and iPadOS 16.4.1 updates were discovered by Clément Lecigne of Google's Threat Analysis Group and Donncha Ó Cearbhaill of Amnesty International’s Security Lab. Both researchers have been credited for discovering several security vulnerabilities in the past.

The urgency of the security update underscores the need for users to prioritize their device's security. Installing the update should be done as soon as possible to ensure that devices are protected from possible attacks.
