The Nigerian Communications Commission’s Computer Security Incident Response Team (NCC-CSIRT) has alerted the public to be cautious of cybercriminals who are using AI-generated YouTube videos to distribute malware. According to the Director of Public Affairs of the NCC, Reuben Mouka, unsuspecting viewers of these tutorial videos will be tricked into clicking on links in the video description that will lead to the download of data-stealing malware.
The advisory stated that video tutorials featuring humans created with AI were being used to lure in victims with trustworthy facial features, before redirecting them to download malware-laden software links in the video descriptions. Such videos may also disguise themselves as software updates or phishing scams, with the result that viewers may inadvertently infect their devices or reveal personal data.
NCC-CSIRT emphasized the importance of avoiding pirated software, installing antivirus software and EDR solutions, and thinking carefully before clicking any link. The number of such YouTube videos rose 200-300 percent month-on-month from November 2022, and victims risked significant consequences such as data theft, financial loss, and reputational damage.
The NCC-CSIRT's warning is timely and emphasizes the need for increased awareness and vigilance when using the internet. With the rising use of AI-generated content, it is essential to remain informed and cautious to avoid falling victim to cybercrime.
