A section of a five-story building in the popular Balogun Market on Lagos Island was engulfed by fire on Tuesday, destroying properties worth millions of naira in the process. The inferno was reported to have started at around 8 am from 32 Balogun Plaza, where ladies' shoe dealers are situated. An eyewitness reported that balls of fire billowed and smoke enveloped the skyline, causing panic in the area.

The cause of the fire could not be ascertained, and no casualties were recorded at the time of report. The state emergency responders, including the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), Nigeria Police, and several other security agencies, arrived and cordoned off the area for an effective rescue operation.

Director of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, Margaret Adeseye, confirmed that the situation had been brought under control as of 10:30 am. According to Adeseye, "The Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service is currently attending to a Fire outbreak at the famous Balogun Market, which involved the topmost floor of a five-story building. The Fire is, however, under control as mitigation is on to limit its spread."

The incident has once again drawn attention to the need for the government and market management to put in place adequate fire prevention measures to prevent such occurrences. Balogun Market is known for its vibrant trading activities, with many traders selling a wide variety of products. The market attracts thousands of visitors daily, and the management must ensure the safety of everyone within the market.

The Lagos State government has continually stressed the need for citizens to be safety-conscious and adhere to fire prevention guidelines. With the timely intervention of the emergency responders, the impact of the inferno was minimal, and no lives were lost. However, this incident is a wake-up call to all stakeholders to ensure that adequate measures are put in place to prevent future occurrences.
