CBN Dismisses Fake News on Old Naira Notes Extension Shared on Aisha Buhari's Instagram

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has debunked a false press release shared on the Instagram page of the First Lady, Aisha Buhari. The purported news alleged that the old N500 and N1000 notes would remain legal tender until May 1, 2023.

In a swift response to the misleading news, the CBN released a statement labeling the release shared by Aisha Buhari as 'fake news'. The apex bank clarified that it had been directed to reissue and recirculate only the old N200 banknotes, which would circulate as legal tender for 60 days, up to April 10, 2023.
The CBN has advised members of the public to disregard any information not officially released by the bank on the subject. Media practitioners have also been urged to verify information from reliable sources before publication.

It is unclear who is behind the false news, but it is suspected to be the work of fraudsters seeking to take advantage of unsuspecting members of the public. The CBN has assured Nigerians that it will continue to ensure the stability of the country's financial system and protect the interest of Nigerians.

The CBN has advised the public to report any suspicious activities to the appropriate authorities for prompt action.
