The Sagamu Local Government Area of Ogun State, Nigeria, experienced a violent protest on Monday over scarcity of new naira notes. The chaos led to the attack and burning of banks and business premises, looting of cars, and forced closure of shops. The unrest started around 5:30 am while law-abiding citizens were still sleeping.
The police, led by the state Commissioner of Police, Frank Mba, and soldiers intervened and arrested 30 suspects linked to the violence. The Oba Erinwole Road, with seven commercial bank branches, was the most affected area as the attackers vandalised and looted ATM machines, leaving the area in disarray.
The hoodlums even attempted to break the wall of a bank branch to access the banking hall and the strong room, but the intervention of the police and Nigerian Army stopped them from escalating the violence.
Following the violent protest, law enforcement officers were deployed to strategic locations to ensure peace and prevent a repeat of the chaos. Mba warned against violent protests, noting that it would compound the already fragile situation in the country. Although relative normalcy has been restored, the neighbourhood is still reeling from the aftermath of the unrest.
