On Friday, the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) in Nigeria issued a directive to foreign broadcasters with offices in the country to register within 30 days.
In addition, the commission advised Internet Protocol Television and other online streaming services to also register to avoid disconnection and possible prosecution.
These announcements were made by the Director-General of NBC, Balarabe Ilelah, while presenting newly approved licenses to 67 broadcasting companies.
Ilelah congratulated the beneficiaries and noted that it was a rare opportunity that many people would be willing to have, and it was an indication of President Muhammadu Buhari's democratic disposition.
He also reminded broadcasters that having a DTT or FM license did not automatically qualify them to stream online as they were two different licenses.
The NBC is determined to collaborate with security agencies to clamp down on illegal broadcasters in the country. Ilelah implored the broadcasters to promote Nigeria's democratic values, national unity, and cultural heritage.
He also urged them to aim for 100% Nigerian content and to act responsibly and in accordance with the broadcasting Act, Code, and other extant laws in Nigeria.
In addition, Ilelah warned that licensees that were yet to pay their outstanding debts should pay or have their licenses revoked for illegal broadcasting.
"Refusal to pay NBC fee is an economic sabotage, and the commission will have no option than to collaborate with security and anti-corruption agencies to redeem the debts," he added.
It is important for foreign broadcasters with offices in Nigeria and other broadcasting companies that stream online to heed the NBC's directives and register accordingly to avoid possible disconnection and prosecution.
Nigerian broadcasting companies should also comply with the NBC regulations and act responsibly to promote the country's democratic values, national unity, and cultural heritage.
