In a recent attack on Sunday, suspected members of the outlawed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) assaulted the Police Divisional Headquarters in Nkwelle-Ezunaka, located in the Oyi Local Government Area of Anambra State, located in southeast Nigeria. The attack resulted in the death of a police officer who was on duty at the time of the incident.
The police spokesperson for the state, Tochukwu Ikenga, disclosed that the attackers came in two SUV vehicles and a Toyota Sienna and were armed with rifles and improvised explosive devices. Upon their arrival, they indiscriminately fired shots to gain entry into the facility, but the police officers who were present at the station fought back fiercely.
The spokesperson disclosed that during the gun duel, six of the IPOB members were killed by the police operatives. The attackers threw a petrol bomb inside the station, which partially affected one office, while a patrol vehicle parked in front of the station was also set on fire. The officer who was killed had been fatally wounded, and some of the hoodlums had escaped with gunshot injuries during the shoot-out.
A reinforcement team of military and police mobile force operatives arrived at the scene and took control of the situation. The police were able to recover two AK-47 rifles, a Toyota Sienna vehicle, and charms from the gunmen during the operation. Mr. Ikenga revealed that the situation was under control and being monitored, and joint operations were ongoing to track down the fleeing insurgents.
The attack on the police station has elicited outrage from members of the public, who are calling for an end to such attacks by IPOB members. The police authorities have called on the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to the relevant authorities.
