Officials of the Sokoto State Area Command of the Nigeria Customs Service, on Saturday, said it intercepted two truckloads of unregistered drugs worth several millions of naira. Bamidele Akande, the state Area Comptroller, who disclosed this to journalists, said the drugs were smuggled into Nigeria from Niger Republic through Shinkafi Local Niger Government Area of Zamfara State.

He said the intercepted drugs included 90 cartons of tramol capsules, cough syrups, among others. According to him, no fewer than 38 cartons of such drugs were also intercepted in Isa Local Government Area of Sokoto State. Akande said that the seized drugs had no NAFDAC registration numbers. “One person has been arrested in connection with the smuggling of the drugs and prosecution will follow as soon as investigations are concluded,’’ he said.

The state comptroller said that the command had not recorded any case of smuggling of arms because of its adherence to 100 per cent of inspection of all items coming into the country through there. “My area of jurisdiction is a no-go-area for any smugglers, because we are ready for them,’’ he said. Akande revealed that the command had embarked on community-based enlightenment campaigns to sensitise the people in border areas on their roles toward curbing smuggling.
