The chairman of the Stem Cell Transplantation Centre for Africa(STEMCETA), Dr. Perry Iloegbunam, has accused some officials of the Ministry of Science and Technology and National Biotechnology Development Agency (NABDA) of deliberately scuttling the federal government’s efforts of domesticating the stem cell therapy in the country.
Stem cell therapy is a minor surgical treatment of ailments involving the implantation of stem cells from live tissues to repair the cells of damaged organs through cell transplant.
Speaking to some journalists yesterday in Abuja, Dr. Iloegbulam who is also the chairman of the national committee on the research and application of stem cell transplantation technology in Nigeria (NACRASTIN) said some government officials were colluding with some businessmen to hijack the project for their selfish interests.
“The goal of stem cell therapy is to facilitate repair of damaged tissues and organs. This is done by transplanting stem cells into damaged areas and directing them to grow and produce new healthy cells replacing damaged tissues and organs. This fast growing technology was first introduced by our organisation, STEMCETA, in partnership with the best brains of experts in the world.
“We have it on good authority that this noble project is on the verge of being hijacked by some moneybags businessmen who have seen the economic benefit in it after over 10 years of our painful and tortuous road towards the introduction of the therapy in Nigeria. Arrangements have been concluded to sideline STEMCETA and NACRASTIN for those people to take over. Already it has been declared that our file in the ministry is missing and a parallel committee has been constituted which has commenced business without reference to us or anything we have achieved since the past 10 years in Nigeria,” he said...[sundaytrust.com.ng]
