Nigeria: Security men beat up university union executive

Kano: Some men believed to be officials of the state security services (SSS) in Kano today beat up the north west zonal coordinator of the Academic Staff Union of Universities Dr. Baffa Abdullahi Bichi after he resisted being taken away without an arrest warrant.

Narrating his ordeal to Daily Trust, Baffa said in the early morning hours he went to the union's secretariat at the Bayero University. Some men came and asked him to follow them to the SSS office and he told them to let him follow them on his own but they insisted that they will take him with them and he replied thatan arrest must be made with a warrant.

He said one of them forced him to stand and with the help of another armed agent were trying to push him into their vehicle but he struggled and began to shout for help. A woman identified as Halima came to the scene and helped in alerting other people inside the university.

He said he was man handled and sustained bruises when in an attempt to make a phone call they tried wrest the phone from him inthe course of their struggle. He said when they realized that more attention was being drawn they decided to leave.

He said he could identify two of them and that one was the labour desk officer in the SSS office in Kano and said he was lucky not to have gotten a fracture but was in pain at the time he was taken to the hospital clinic.

The chairman of the ASUU BUK chapter, Dr Mahmud Lawal, said they were dismayed by the act and will not take it lightly, he said the act was a callous one and the union will not relent in their effort to see justice is done
