Article | How to check expiry date of your car tyres

All car tyres have expiry dates and the standard validity period is four years from the Date of Manufacture (DOM). However, it could be subject to review depending on the usage. But it's often advisable and safe to go with the manufacturer's date.

How to find out whether your tyre has expired?
First, check the sidewall of your tyre for a stamp like this: (*0204*). There is an asterisk at the beginning and at the end of this serial number (some tires don't have asterisk).
-The first two digits indicate the week meanwhile the last two digits depict the year of manufacture.
Therefore, *0204* shows that the said tyre is manufactured in the 2nd week of the year 2004.
Thus, it expired in the 2nd week of the year 2008.
Check all your tyres for safety purposes. Do not use expired tyres. They are likely to burst, especially when driving in hot weather because the rubber components may have hardened and cracked.
Warning signs - Regardless of the age, tyres should be replaced if they show significant cracking in the tread grooves or sidewall and bulging of the tread face or sidewall. All tyres, especially unused spare tyres, should be inspected periodically to determine their suitability for service.
According to Roger Griggs: "Tyres contain anti-oxidising chemicals to slow the rate of ageing, but they need to be in use for these to be effective. Infrequent use or poor storage can accelerate the ageing process and make tyres unroadworthy. Low mileage, older cars tend to be most at risk from premature ageing."..
