NIGERIA — The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has officially recognized the Youth Party (YP) as the 19th political party in Nigeria. This announcement comes after the Supreme Court overturned INEC's decision to deregister the Youth Party, which was originally registered on October 2017 based on the Federal High Court’s judgement.

Following INEC's decision to deregister several political parties, including the Youth Party, in accordance with Section 225A of the 1999 Constitution, the Youth Party secured an order from the Federal High Court to prevent their deregistration. However, the Court of Appeals later overturned the order and ultimately the Supreme Court set aside the deregistration of the party.

In light of the Supreme Court's ruling, INEC officials met with Youth Party officials to discuss the party's operation in accordance with Nigeria's constitution, the Electoral Act of 2022, and INEC's regulations and guidelines.

The recognition of the Youth Party grants the party all the rights and privileges accorded to political parties in Nigeria.

Festus Okoye Esq., the National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, issued a press release regarding the recognition of the Youth Party on July 20th, 2023.

The recognition of the Youth Party reflects the importance of fair and unbiased judicial decisions and the need to create a level playing field for political parties in Nigeria.
