According to a new study published in the journal Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society as reported by phys.org, the age of our universe could be nearly twice as old as current estimates. The traditional cosmological model has calculated the age of our universe at 13.797 billion years, but the new model devised by author Rajendra Gupta, adjunct professor of physics at the University of Ottawa, suggests that it could be 26.7 billion years old instead. This changes the timeline for galaxy formation by several billion years, and explains the "impossible early galaxy problem."

The study also challenges the dominant cosmological model, proposing a hybrid phenomenon that interprets the redshift as a combination of Zwicky's tired light theory and the expanding universe. By allowing for the evolution of coupling constants, which govern the interactions between particles, the timeframe for the formation of early galaxies can be extended from a few hundred million years to several billion years, providing a more feasible explanation for their advanced level of development and mass. This modification in the cosmological model also addresses the puzzle of small galaxy sizes observed in the early universe.

These findings shed new light on the age and evolution of the universe, and could have significant implications for future studies of cosmic history. "Our newly-devised model challenges the traditional interpretation of the cosmological constant, and suggests a constant that accounts for the evolution of the coupling constants instead," says Gupta. This could allow for more accurate observations of the early universe and help to resolve existing discrepancies between theory and observation.
