FRANCE — The recent spate of violent protests across France has begun to impact the country's tourism sector as hotels and restaurants face cancellations and damage. The unrest comes after the fatal police shooting of a teenager during a traffic stop in a Paris suburb.
"Our hotel members have suffered a wave of cancellations of reservations in all the territories affected by the damage and clashes," said Thierry Marx, president of the main association for hotel and catering industry employers. Since the protests began, industry professionals have reported "attacks, looting and destruction of their businesses, including some restaurants and cafes."
The French retail federation has also called for increased police presence around stores, with over 100 food or non-food stores vandalised and burned. The Paris Ile-de-France Chamber of Commerce is ensuring teams are mobilised to support affected companies.
