NIGERIA — A tragic event occurred on Monday in the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja as a four-storey building collapsed, leaving many people trapped inside. The incident happened at the construction site at Life Camp, Jabi at around 4:00 pm. The building, which was intended for hotel accommodation, gave way suddenly and trapped several on-site workers.
According to eyewitnesses, the building collapsed due to the use of substandard materials, which was evident in the swampy Dape area near Berger Clinic where the building was located. The collapse occurred after the engineer left the site when the casting work was in progress.
Rescue operations are in progress at the site, but the lack of major equipment on the ground is hindering efforts. The Nigerian police, the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), and the FCT Fire Service are among the rescue teams on the ground. The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) officials present at the scene have refused to comment, focusing solely on saving the lives of the trapped workers.
This catastrophic building collapse highlights the need for strict enforcement of building regulations to ensure that substandard materials are not used in construction. It is also a reminder of the importance of ensuring that construction workers' safety measures are in place to avoid such tragic incidents.
