NIGERIA — Yesterday, chaos erupted in the Shomolu-Bariga area of Lagos State as three unidentified individuals lost their lives in a violent clash between rival cult groups. One of the victims, who sustained a bullet wound, is currently in a coma at an undisclosed hospital.
While the exact cause of the conflict remains unclear, sources suggest it stems from a power struggle between the Neo-Black Movement (also known as Aye Black Axe) and the Eiye Confraternity.
The clashes started near the Idi-Aba area, a known haven for notorious cultists and drug dealers, spreading to Akilo, Sungas, and Olorunkemi Street in Shomolu, resulting in injuries to innocent bystanders. The incident serves as a warning ahead of the cultists' anticipated 7/7 celebrations, where they have vowed to wreak further havoc.
Concerned residents are now appealing to Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Idowu Owohunwa, for assistance, as the cultists have issued threats of revenge in certain areas. The police spokesperson, Benjamin Hundeyin, has yet to respond to messages and calls seeking comment.
This recent episode adds to the surge in cult-related violence, with 14 fatalities reported in Lagos State over the past five months. The police have apprehended 17 suspects in Ikorodu, Badagry, and Isolo and Commissioner Owohunwa has urged tactical teams to curtail the activities of cultists in the state.
