UNITED STATES — Mechanical malfunctions at the Aberdeen Water Works Treatment Plant have resulted in an increased chance of disease-causing organisms in the drinking water supply, according to officials in Aberdeen, South Dakota.

After a water sample taken in July tested at more than five times the safe drinking water standard, the city issued a notice advising residents of the elevated risk.

While it is not necessary for residents to boil or decontaminate their water, individuals with compromised immune systems, infants and older people should contact their health care providers before drinking the water.

One of the two malfunctioning water filters has been repaired, while the other remains offline until it has been fixed. AP News reports.
