NIGERIA — A gas explosion in the Agege area of Lagos state has left four people in intensive care at a local hospital. The incident occurred early Monday morning due to a gas cylinder leakage from a shop located beside the Apostolic Church.
Three women and a man who sustained second degree burns were immediately transferred to Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH) for medical attention. The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) confirmed that first responders were able to extinguish the fire before it spread to other buildings in the neighborhood.
The permanent secretary of LASEMA, Femi Oke-Osanyintolu, has disclosed that the third-degree burns victims sustained were not fatal, but precautionary measures have been proposed to prevent future occurrences.
LASEMA, in collaboration with the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, conducted a post-incident assessment on the shop and concluded that the shop’s operation should be temporarily shut down. LASEMA has advised residents in the area to be vigilant and report any gas leakages to the authorities to prevent loss of lives and property.
