The Saqqara necropolis in Egypt, a UNESCO World Heritage site, has recently revealed a significant discovery, according to the authorities of Egyptian antiquities. Arab News reports.
Archaeologists uncovered ancient workshops and tombs that paint a vivid picture of life during the 30th Pharaonic Dynasty and the Ptolemaic period.
Mostafa Waziri, the secretary-general of the Supreme Council of Antiquities, stated that the workshops had served as the spaces used to mummify both humans and sacred animals. Inside the workshops' walls, clay pots and other items used in mummification, as well as ritual vessels, were found, he added.
The tombs, meanwhile, provided an opportunity for archaeologists to peek into the lives of the most influential figures from ancient Egypt. One belonged to a top official from the Old Kingdom, while the other was for a priest from the New Kingdom, explained Sabri Farag, the head of the Saqqara archaeological site. These tombs give us a glimpse of daily life in ancient Egypt.
The announcement of this discovery is part of Egypt's recent push to promote new archaeological finds to international media and diplomats.
