Five Nigerian soldiers lost their lives after their vehicle hit a suspected mine planted by Islamic State-aligned jihadists near the border with Niger, according to vanguard's report.
The unit was on patrol near the village of Laayi when they drove over the mine. The explosion was suspected to have been set up by Islamic State West Africa (ISWAP) militants, who had attacked the village the previous night, kidnapping four locals, including the chief.
The group has become a significant threat in Nigeria, killing and kidnapping passengers at checkpoints while attacking soldiers on patrol. The insurgency has displaced more than two million people and has claimed over 40,000 lives.
