Nigerian Ports Authority Bolsters Security at TinCan Island Ports

The Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) has reinforced security measures at the TinCan Island ports in Lagos by building a concrete fence and installing an automated access control gate. The move is part of efforts to enhance safety and restrict access to the port, with the aim of curbing pilfering, theft, and thuggery.

NPA Managing Director Mohammed Bello-Koko made the announcement during a recent tour of the port. He said the new fence would restrict entrance to the port to only those with legitimate business there, while also creating a conducive business environment in line with the International Ship and Port Facility Code. Bello-Koko added that the use of automated access control gates would also be enforced to improve security.

In addition to the fencing, the NPA is safeguarding the waterside by increasing patrols and collaborating with the Nigerian Navy to secure the ports in Lagos. The agency has purchased a security patrol boat and is exploring ways to fence the waterfront to restrict access to the port. Rehabilitation of internal roads within the port is also ongoing to improve user experience.

According to Bello-Koko, the NPA is committed to working with stakeholders, community members, and the Lagos State government to ensure the effective and efficient operation of the ports.
