In a recent statement by the spokesman for the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), it was revealed that an additional sum of nine hundred million (900m) Naira had been recovered for the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS).
This amount was allegedly withheld by some deposit money banks since 2015, in a fraudulent act where they refused to remit the money into the Treasury Single Account for NHIS.
The EFCC, in its continued efforts to recover funds for the scheme, released the sum to NHIS on February 8, 2023.
This recovery comes on the heels of previous recoveries of N1.5 billion and N1.4 billion, released to the scheme on February 10, 2022, and August 5, 2022, respectively.
The Executive Secretary of NHIS, Prof. Muhammad Nasir Sambo, had previously commended the EFCC for its assistance in recovering trapped funds in commercial banks.
The EFCC's unwavering efforts in recovering funds for the NHIS will go a long way in improving the delivery of healthcare services to Nigerians.
